Case Study: Boston Scientific Team-Building Workshop with Rhythmworks Taiko

Introduction

At Rhythmworks, we believe in the power of taiko drumming as a transformative team-building experience. We had the pleasure of hosting our second corporate taiko drumming workshop with the Supply Chain Team from Boston Scientific in Farnham. This high-energy session brought colleagues together through rhythm, movement, and powerful group dynamics, creating a truly memorable team-building event.

Setting the Stage

From the moment the team arrived, it was clear they were ready to engage and take on the challenge of taiko drumming. Many participants had no prior drumming experience, but that didn’t stop them from jumping in with enthusiasm. As our lead facilitator Mark introduced the fundamentals, the group quickly discovered that taiko isn’t just about rhythm—it’s about teamwork, communication, and trust.

Breaking Barriers and Building Connections

As with any new challenge, the team started with some hesitation. One participant admitted, “I’ve just done taiko drumming—it was really good, but I’ve got no sense of rhythm!” Yet, as the session progressed, the group found their groove. Through synchronised drumming patterns and energetic kiai (shouts), they overcame initial self-doubt and came together as a cohesive unit.

One participant reflected, “I think it was good with the team because we lost our inhibitions through the process and just worked together. It took a little while, but halfway through, we decided to work as a team, and it worked really well.”

A Standout Performance

By the end of the workshop, the Boston Scientific team delivered an outstanding final performance. The group’s commitment to rhythm and teamwork was evident not only in their precise drumming but also in their vocal energy. Our facilitator, Mark, remarked, “The shouts were among the best I’ve ever heard from a corporate group!”

The Power of Taiko for Team Building

This workshop demonstrated the impact of taiko as a team-building tool. Through shared effort and synchronised movement, participants not only improved their listening and coordination skills but also experienced the power of collective achievement. Another team member summed it up perfectly: “We came in with mixed expectations, but we left feeling energised, realising that we were part of one big ensemble. We worked through it together.”
